Forget popping bottles, buy a vineyard
Ever wonder what it would be like to get your hands dirty cultivating your own wine?
It’s common for Italians in the countryside to own a small vineyard and olive grove used for the production of their own wine and olive oil. Especially in wine regions like Chianti in Tuscany, were you can find some of the finest wine Italy has to offer.
The first decision prospective winemakers face is whether to buy an existing winery or to start entirely from scratch. From a risk/reward perspective, the former is far wiser. A vintner is only as good as his land, and in most established wine regions, the best territories were identified long ago. There’s no way of knowing an undeveloped land’s true potential until the first few vintage bottles are in the cellar, and it takes three years to yield enough fruit for commercial winemaking.
The second critical decision is where to buy. Wine grapes can be successfully cultivated in many places, but most aspiring vintners are rightly attracted to Italy’s rich territories and available acreage, in addition to the quality of Sangiovese grapes which flourish best in the dry, warm Tuscan hills.
